Motorsport Weekend Wrap-up

Mar 4, 2024

This weekend saw Shane van Gisbergen racing in Las Vegas, the opening of the World Endurance Championship for 2024, and Marco Giltrap wrap up his time in Porsche Sprint Challenge Southern Europe.

NASCAR Xfinity

Shane van Gisbergen had a rocky weekend in Sin City this weekend as NASCAR Xfinity went to Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Off the back of his top three finish at the last event in Atlanta, Qualifying didn’t go the Supercars champ’s way after his qualifying lap was only good for a start from P25.

SVG’s race was over not long after it began. The start of the race was uneventful, with SVG falling and gaining positions until he was forced to come in to pit road about halfway through the first stage due to engine issues. His car would end up staying in pit lane as the car was unable to return to the track, leaving SVG classified in P37.

World Endurance Championship

The World Endurance Championship returned this weekend for it’s first outing of the year at the Lusail Circuit in Qatar.

A record Hypercar grid of 19 cars took part, with new rules and manufacturers meaning the pecking order was anyone’s guess.

The #2 Cadillac V-Series.R of Earl Bamber managed to qualify P4 in the hands of Bamber’s teammate Alex Lynn. Defending champion Brendon Hartley couldn’t quite find the pace, leaving the #8 Toyota starting from P11.

The race ran 1812km, and it was not short on drama. Porsche cars locked out the podium, while Peugeot were on track for their highest result yet before the #93 car ran out of fuel on the penultimate lap.

The #2 Cadillac of Bamber managed to defy the odds after turn 1 contact with another Hypercar to bring their car home in P4 after nearly 10 hours.

Toyota’s pace struggles carried through into the race, with Hartley’s #8 car finishing P9.

Porsche Sprint Challenge Southern Europe

The Porshe Sprint Challenge Southern Europe series wrapped up this weekend in Barcelona, with Marco Giltrap wrapping up his season with a P11 in Race 1 and P8 in Race 2.

This series was hugely valuable experience for Giltrap’s upcoming season in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, the first race of which will be run at the Australian Grand Prix.
